What’s the big deal about guitar straps?
Well, none, really. It’s just that a good guitar strap can save you months of shoulder and neck ache, and can help you set your guitar at just the right height that fits your build and playing style best.
If you’ve spent any time on stage, you can attest that the last thing you want on your mind is a poor guitar strap digging into your shoulder, or having the adjustment slip and change your playing height mid-solo. Not a pretty sight when you can’t find the right notes in the dark because your feel is off.
Finding good guitar straps is actually not that hard to do. It just entails taking your guitar with you to the guitar store, grabbing a selection of the ones you like, and try each of them on for size. Take home the ones you like, and throw the rest back in the pile.
Detailed leather guitar straps are among the most expensive on the market, but in terms of comfort, looks, and durability, they’re tough to beat. I have a large build, so I tend to like wider guitar straps around the shoulders to keep the weight from digging in to my upper back and shoulder area. Smaller guys complain about wide leather guitar straps as being too chafing on their collarbone and shoulder bones. Try before you buy is the best advice here.
As far as looks go, if you’re looking for something outrageous, there are custom guitar straps with LED lights in them, flourescent guitar straps, and straps with bright reflective tape on them. Totally a matter of personal taste, but be sure you pick something that goes with your guitar’s look and style. The bright, flashy guitar strap doesn’t look too cool holding up a big old acoustic.
